Revolutionizing Animal Care: The Pet Resource Center

Rania Alomar's Design Marries Function with Local Vernacular

In Bentonville, Arkansas, a groundbreaking facility emerges, redefining the principles of animal care through innovative architecture that resonates with the local spirit.

At the heart of the Pet Resource Center's design lies a question posed by the client, which became the cornerstone of Rania Alomar's creative process: how to integrate the new structure into the local vernacular. The answer unfolds across six acres, where the center stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of rural heritage and modern functionality. Drawing inspiration from the pastoral charm of Bentonville's barns and open fields, Alomar has crafted a facility that stands out for its absence of traditional kennels and cages, opting instead for a philosophy that promotes the well-being of animals through a more natural and community-centric approach.

The architectural language of the Pet Resource Center is a direct response to the typological study of local barns, resulting in a roofscape that is both efficient and intentional. The design's unique properties lie in its innovative approach to animal sheltering, prioritizing the health and behavior of its inhabitants. The structure's 20,000 square feet of interior space, matched with an equal measure of exterior space, is a physical manifestation of this forward-thinking philosophy.

Functionality extends beyond the building's form, as the center operates as a nexus for pet adoption and fostering. An internal bridge connects the community and medical wings, doubling as a shaded area for events and a space for volunteers to gather and work. The design's realization technology, rooted in a deep analysis of architectural strategies, ensures that the center's slopes and peaks not only traverse the site but also provide shelter and support for the program.

Alomar's design journey began in January 2020, culminating in the completion of construction in March 2023. The project's research phase involved an in-depth study of the local vernacular, leading to a modern architectural solution that supports the center's multifaceted functions. The challenges faced were not just creative or technical but also philosophical, as the team sought to redefine the building type to be more inclusive, welcoming, and community-focused.

The Pet Resource Center stands as a beacon of innovation in animal care, a testament to Rania Alomar's vision and dedication. It is a design that not only provides a sanctuary for animals but also educates and involves the community. Recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2024, the center is a shining example of how architecture can transform lives—both human and animal.

With photography by Ralf Strathmann capturing the essence of this architectural marvel, the Pet Resource Center is not just a building; it's a movement towards a more compassionate and engaged approach to animal welfare, setting a new standard for shelters worldwide.
